What Washington law requires
Washington's RCW 9.41.280 bars firearms and other dangerous weapons from school facilities, with exemptions in subsection (3) that include persons engaged in military, law enforcement or school district security activities. The statute also requires anyone providing school security under an administrator's direction who is not a commissioned officer to be trained to the law-enforcement standard before carrying any electronic device.
DIS holds Washington private security company license SAB40000310 and certifies officers as armed private security guards through the Department of Licensing under RCW 18.170, including the firearms certificate and the eight-hour pre-assignment training. For each district we document the authorization and the officers' training files so the exemption is clean on paper.
Washington requires every district to maintain a comprehensive safe school plan under RCW 28A.320.125, reviewed with local emergency responders and tested through drills. DIS officers participate in the drills and our regional manager supports the plan.
