What Florida law requires
Since the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act, Florida has required at least one armed safe-school officer on every public school campus, including charter schools, whenever school is in session. Section 1006.12 gives a district or charter governing board four lawful options: a sworn school resource officer, a district-employed school safety officer, a Guardian drawn from school staff, or a school security guard contracted from a licensed security agency who completes the sheriff-administered Guardian training.
DIS officers serve under that fourth option. Each holds a Class D security officer license and a Class G statewide firearms license, completes the 144-hour Guardian program run by the county sheriff, passes the psychological evaluation and drug screen the statute requires, and is approved by the district before the first day. Charter governing boards may contract with DIS directly under §1006.12(4), with notice to the district school board and a contract that spells out training and responsibilities.
Florida also requires the 72-hour notification to the Office of Safe Schools when an officer is assigned or removed, documented participation in the annual active-assailant drills, and youth mental health awareness training. DIS files the notifications, keeps the training records and supplies them to your safety specialist on request.
