The law in Maryland

What Maryland law requires

Criminal Law §4-102(a) · Bus. Occ. & Prof. Title 19

Maryland's school-weapons statute, Criminal Law §4-102, bars deadly weapons on public school property but exempts a person hired by a county board of education specifically for the purpose of guarding public school property, as well as law enforcement officers. That exemption is the lane a contracted armed officer works in for public schools. Nonpublic schools are not covered by §4-102 and arm through the State Police wear-and-carry permit under Public Safety §5-301 et seq.

DIS holds Maryland State Police security guard agency license 25PLU-SG66469. Every officer is certified through the MSP Licensing Division, and armed officers hold the wear-and-carry permit the State Police issues. For each program we align the board's engagement, the officers' permits and the school's emergency plan so the authorization is clean on paper.

Maryland's Safe to Learn Act also requires every school system to have a school safety coordinator, a behavioral threat assessment team and an emergency plan reviewed with the Maryland Center for School Safety. DIS supports the coordinator and provides threat assessment training to the team.

Statutes summarized for orientation; each engagement is reviewed against current law with the school's counsel. Licensing board: Maryland State Police, Licensing Division.
