The law in Arkansas

What Arkansas law requires

Commissioned School Security Officer · Ark. Code §17-40-208(d)

Arkansas lets a school district or an open-enrollment charter employ or contract for Commissioned School Security Officers, armed personnel commissioned by the Arkansas State Police under Ark. Code §17-40-208(d) and the Arkansas School Safety Commission's standards. The commission requires 60 hours of initial training in firearms qualification, active-shooter scenarios, trauma care, defensive tactics, weapon retention and de-escalation, with 24 hours of annual in-service.

DIS holds Arkansas security company license CMPY.0003494 and employs CSSOs who completed that curriculum and were commissioned by the State Police. In the 2025–26 school year DIS and Jonesboro Public Schools formed the first district-contractor CSSO partnership in Arkansas, and DIS officers now protect eight Arkansas campuses.

The Arkansas Center for School Safety and the 2018 School Safety Commission recommendations also call for a trained armed presence at every campus, a current emergency operations plan and coordination with local law enforcement. DIS officers are introduced to the police chief or sheriff before day one and participate in the district's drills.

Statutes summarized for orientation; each engagement is reviewed against current law with the school's counsel. Licensing board: Arkansas State Police, Regulatory Services Division.

Questions from Arkansas boards and principals

Straight answers for Arkansas

What is an Arkansas Commissioned School Security Officer?
A school security officer commissioned through the Arkansas State Police under Ark. Code §17-40-208(d), with the 60-hour training the School Safety Commission requires in firearms, active-shooter response, trauma care, defensive tactics, weapon retention and de-escalation, and 24 hours of annual refresher training.
Can an Arkansas district contract with a security company for CSSOs?
Yes. Jonesboro Public Schools did so with DIS in 2025, the first district in the state to use a licensed contractor's commissioned officers rather than hiring them as district employees. DIS prepares the contract and the State Police commissioning paperwork.
Where in Arkansas does DIS operate?
Officers are on campus in Northeast Arkansas today, with regional pools being built for Little Rock, Northwest Arkansas and Fort Smith. Contact us for the 2027–28 school year.
Does DIS work with Arkansas charter schools?
Yes. Open-enrollment charters may employ or contract CSSOs the same way districts do, and private schools contract with DIS as licensed armed security for their campuses.
