What Tennessee law requires
Tennessee registers armed guards through the Department of Commerce & Insurance under Title 62, Chapter 35. Since 2023, no guard may be posted at a public, private or church-related school without completing school-specific active-shooter training within the first sixty days, on top of the general and firearms training and the 70% marksmanship qualification the registration requires.
Public districts arm officers through a memorandum of understanding with the chief of the local law enforcement agency under §49-6-815, and may authorize off-duty officers as armed security under §49-6-809. Nonpublic schools adopt their own written handgun-carry policy under §49-50-803. DIS holds Tennessee contract security company license 14465 and builds each campus program around whichever instrument governs it.
Tennessee also requires every school to maintain a building-level safety plan, conduct annual armed-intruder drills and operate a threat assessment team under the 2023 school safety act. DIS officers participate in the drills and our regional manager supports the plan and the team.
