The law in Georgia

What Georgia law requires

O.C.G.A. §16-11-130.1 · §20-2-1185 school safety plans

Georgia leaves the decision to arm school security to the local board of education or the governing body of a private school. Under O.C.G.A. §16-11-130.1 a board may authorize personnel to carry on campus once they complete the training the statute lists: judgment-shooting, marksmanship, use of force and an annual background check. The authorization is recorded by the board and the identities of armed personnel are kept confidential.

DIS is licensed by the Georgia Board of Private Detective and Security Agencies (license PSC002808). Our armed officers hold Georgia armed security registrations, complete the statute's training and are presented to the board for authorization before they are posted.

Georgia also requires every school to maintain a school safety plan under §20-2-1185, prepared with local law enforcement and emergency management, reviewed annually and filed with GEMA/HS. DIS writes the security section of that plan with your administration and supports the drills the plan calls for.

Statutes summarized for orientation; each engagement is reviewed against current law with the school's counsel. Licensing board: Georgia Board of Private Detective and Security Agencies.

Questions from Georgia boards and principals

Straight answers for Georgia

Can a Georgia school board authorize private armed security on campus?
Yes. O.C.G.A. §16-11-130.1 lets a local board of education, or the governing body of a private school, authorize personnel to carry on school property once they complete the training and background checks the statute requires. DIS officers are presented to the board for that authorization.
What training does Georgia require for armed school security?
The statute requires training in judgment shooting, marksmanship and use of force, plus an annual criminal background check. DIS officers also hold Georgia armed security registrations and complete DIS active-threat, tactical-medicine and youth mental health first aid training.
Does DIS help with the Georgia school safety plan?
Yes. We write the security section of the §20-2-1185 plan with your administration, coordinate it with the local chief or sheriff, and support the GEMA/HS drill requirements.
