What Louisiana law requires
Louisiana's firearm-free zone statute, R.S. 14:95.2, keeps firearms off school property and out of the 1,000-foot zone around it, with exceptions for POST-certified law enforcement officers, school employees acting in the course of their duties, and any person the principal authorizes in writing, among others listed in subsection C. In 2025 Senate Bill 101 removed privately owned schools from the statute altogether, leaving their governing boards to set their own policy.
DIS holds Louisiana security company license PSE-24-CO-018. Our officers are licensed and firearms-certified through the Louisiana State Board of Private Security Examiners under R.S. 37:3270 et seq., placed under written authorization from the principal or governing board, and introduced to the parish sheriff before they start.
Louisiana also requires every school to maintain a crisis management and response plan reviewed annually with local law enforcement, and the Louisiana Center for Safe Schools publishes the drill and threat-assessment standards. DIS officers participate in the drills and our regional manager supports the plan review.
