What South Carolina law requires
In May 2025 South Carolina enacted Act 36, adding S.C. Code §59-19-275, which authorizes public school districts to employ or contract armed security personnel licensed and registered through SLED under Chapter 18 of Title 40. The act is explicit that these officers supplement school resource officers and do not replace them.
Officers must be at least 21, complete SLED's armed security training and the additional school-specific training on firearms, defensive tactics and active-shooter response, recertify every two years, and train jointly with the local law enforcement agency under a written agreement. DIS holds SLED license 14825 and certification 3790 and already protects four South Carolina campuses.
The district typically holds the proprietary security registration while DIS supplies the officers; charter schools work through their authorizer. DIS drafts the joint-training agreement with the sheriff and prepares the registration filings for the district.
