What New York law requires
New York's Penal Law §265.01-a makes possession of a firearm on school grounds a class E felony unless the school has given written authorization, and it limits who a school may authorize: police and peace officers, school resource officers, and security guards who hold a special armed guard registration card under General Business Law §89-f, whether employed by the school or by a contractor. A school may not authorize a teacher or administrator to carry.
DIS is licensed by the New York Department of State as a watch, guard or patrol agency (license 11000232590). We place only special-armed-card holders on campus: guards who completed the 47-hour firearms training course, the annual 8-hour in-service and the Department of State's background check.
New York's Education Law §2801-a requires every district to adopt a district-wide school safety plan and building-level emergency response plans developed with local law enforcement. DIS writes the security annex of those plans with your administration.
